Why does the Mequon-Thiensville School District need an Education Foundation?

Q Why does the Mequon-Thiensville School District need an Education Foundation?

A:  The Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation’s role is to develop community-wide private financial support for the Mequon-Thiensville school district. Through grants, it supports continued excellence in education and enhances the reputation of the MTSD as one of the finest in the state.  Public schools are under tremendous fiscal constraints today.  In a time of revenue caps and declining enrollment, the Education Foundation plays an even more important role by funding projects that the district would not otherwise have the financial resources to undertake.

Q:  How has the Foundation made a difference?

A:  The Foundation reached an exciting milestone in the 2007/2008 school year, surpassing the $1,500,000 mark in grants presented to the Mequon-Thiensville Public Schools. Grants have been awarded in the following categories:

  • Updating and supporting the district’s technology needs

  • Resources to maintain and sustain core curriculum

  • Staff and Leadership professional development

  • Funds for positions in the district that positively impact classrooms with larger class sizes

  • Teacher recognition awards

We are collaborating with the school district personnel and other school support groups to identify ways to maintain programs and projects "at risk" with the current budget concerns.  Although private dollars are not intended to replace public funding, they can supplement taxpayer dollars to sustain the 'difference making' programs that make us a blue ribbon school district.  Ultimately every child at every level in the Mequon-Thiensville School District benefits from these grants.

Q:  Who decides what projects are funded?

A:  A Grants Advisory Committee (GAC) comprised of representatives from the M-T School District and the Education Foundation was formed as part of the collaborative effort to maintain and sustain “at risk” programs/projects in the school district. The mission of this committee is to identify, prioritize and communicate the needs of the district in order to advise district and funding leadership on the use of private money based on the immediate and long-range goals of the district.

Q:  What is the Fund Development effort?

A:  Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation continues to act as a catalyst to bring together all of the co-curricular groups involved in raising money to benefit the school district and to explore the most efficient methods for raising and allocating private dollars. Given the current funding pressure within MTSD, we must work together to minimize donor and volunteer fatigue and to maximize the positive impact of private dollars.

Q:  How can you support the Foundation?

A:  There are many ways to support the Foundation and enhance excellence in education in our public school system.

  • Gifts to the Annual Campaign, the Technology Fund Project or other designated projects

  • Attendance at fundraising events

  • Donation of a major gift

  • Donations in honor or memory of an individual and/or contributions designated in a will or trust

  • Become a volunteer and help  the Foundation support our school district

NOTE: Contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
